🌞 Summer means snake season is here! We’re incredibly grateful for the venomous snake handling course we held in July with our conservation students. It set us up for success when we recently encountered a highly deadly Puff Adder. 🐍

With careful skill and the proper tools and equipment, we were able to safely relocate the snake to a remote area, where it was released to continue living free. It’s all about respecting wildlife and ensuring safety for both animals and people! 💚

🐑💚 Sheep play a crucial role in the recovery of orphaned rhinos, offering companionship, love, and support as they adjust to their new lives. These gentle animals help the rhinos feel less alone and more at ease in their new environment.

To ensure the sheep remain healthy and continue to provide this essential support, they’ve just received their annual vaccinations, a dip for tick prevention, and a thorough FAMACHA score to assess their anaemia levels and check for any internal worm burdens.

The bond between rhinos is often misunderstood. Meet Kiddies, a resident rhinos, who is currently waiting for specialist treatment to help with shoulder arthritis. It can sometimes be difficult for Kiddies to get to the feed location however her best friend Maki is right by her side, refusing to leave her. Maki has made it clear — she’ll go without food to stay by her side. She also defend and protect Kiddies during feeding times so that she does not get pushed off her food by stronger rhinos, showing us the true meaning of friendship and loyalty in the animal kingdom. 💙 #RhinoLove #AnimalBonds #RhinoConservation #FriendshipGoals #SaveTheRhino

Our students were called into action during an emergency, and they truly delivered! Under the expert guidance of skilled veterinarian Dr Shaun, they assisted in cleaning and stitching up a wound found on a zebra. 🦓

The students carefully clipped away the hair to minimize contamination, cleaned the wound, and worked meticulously to stitch her up. Thanks to their hard work and the guidance of the vet, the procedure was a success, and we’re confident she’ll make a full recovery. 🏥👏

🦁 After extensive persuasion, the government has overturned their original decision to euthanise 7,000 captive lions. To ensure their survival, new regulations allow these majestic creatures to remain living in sanctuaries, with one important condition: owners must have all male lions undergo vasectomies. This move prevents captive breeding while still allowing the males to express natural behaviors, including maintaining their beautiful manes thanks to testosterone. A huge win for animal welfare and a step forward in protecting these incredible animals from unfair death! We wish to see them all roaming free however, unfortunately there is simply not enough land for them to all roam free and with rising numbers being rescued from illegal trades these animals must remain in captivity without risk of adding to captivity numbers. #LionConservation #AnimalWelfare #savethelions

This advanced technology enables satellite tracking to help keep these critically endangered animals safe. 🦏💚

We also had the added bonus of comparing the process directly with a white rhino tracker installation. It was fascinating to see the anatomical differences up close and deepen our understanding of both species. After a long family history of caring for rhinos, the owners made the heart-wrenching decision to move their beloved boy to a safer home. This selfless act is a testament to their unwavering dedication to the species they cherish. Today, our students had an unforgettable experience with Adventure with Elephants! They immersed themselves in the incredible world of elephant care, learning everything from veterinary practices to essential conservation and research efforts.

Under the expert guidance of Dr. Bart, the students witnessed how he skillfully administered an intramuscular injection using an injection pole. They also learned the delicate process of collecting blood from an elephant’s ear—an invaluable skill in elephant care.

The day was rounded off with insights into the critical role of foot care for captive elephants, and the importance of maintaining their health and wellbeing.

Precision, calm, and focus—these are essential when it comes to wildlife veterinary procedures. A steady hand and accurate darting can make or break the success of a procedure. Ensuring you inject your patient in the right spot reduces the stress from the chase and the need for multiple darting attempts, leading to a smoother, more effective process.

Our students recently had the privilege of being trained by the incredible Dr. Bart, a skilled vet who taught them how to aim with accuracy and handle darts like pros. 🎯

In addition to this, they dove into anti-poaching efforts and K9 training, with some bite work to help Reaper strengthen his item protection skills. Reaper is trained to bite when someone comes within 3 meters of the protected item, and release once they’re further away—an essential skill in the fight against poaching.

We are so grateful for the incredible work being done by Bambabela and for allowing our students to be part of a truly rewarding and heartwarming journey. Our students spent their day directly contributing to the rehabilitation of rescued Vervet monkeys, learning what it takes to complete the 6-stage process that prepares these amazing animals for release back into the wild.

These monkeys have been rescued from illegal pet trade, physical and emotional abuse. Our students learnt what it takes to provide vital nutrition to these survivors and offering the care, enrichment and love they need. Every step is a testament to the power of dedication and compassion.
